PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY, Md. (DC News Now) — State’s Attorney Aisha Braveboy said Tuesday that a man charged in the murder of an off-duty security guard that took place in Takoma Park in 2023 was found guilty.

Luiz Marquez, 26, of Silver Spring was convicted on March 27.

Police said Maurice Oliver Chase Jr., 38, was leaving a building at Takoma Towers to help his fiancée whose car had broken down. Someone who lived in the building told him that Marquez was in the commons area of the first floor. Police said it appeared Marquez was smoking crack cocaine at the time. Chase told him to leave. That’s when Marquez tried to enter an apartment. He spit on Chase who hit Marquez in the mouth.

Investigators said Marquez eventually left the building. Chase was standing in its doorway. Marquez pulled out a gun and fired seven shots, hitting Chase. The father of two died at the hospital.
