Man convicted in 2021 Orleans Parish rape case
NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — The Orleans Parish District Attorney’s Office announced that a man has been convicted in a 2021 rape case.
Officials with the OPDA Sexual Assault Kit Initiative Unit said an Orleans Parish jury found Dagoberto Arias guilty of first-degree rape on Wednesday, May 1.

The district attorney’s office reported the victim disclosed to a school employee in 2021 that she had been sexually abused after a teacher noticed “concerning changes in the victim’s disposition and behavior” and notified the school social worker.
According to court documents, the abuse had gone on from 2017 to 2020.
During the trial, the district attorney’s office reported that witnesses testified about the victim’s disclosures of the abuse and its impact on her life.

They said the victim also testified “about the actions of the defendant, and the aftermath they caused.”
Arias’ sentencing is scheduled for June 13, 2024. According to the district attorney’s office, “First Degree Rape carries the sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole.”
