Man back in custody, charged with first-degree murder in Beale Street shooting

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The man accused of shooting a man dead in front of Jerry Lee Lewis’ Cafe last month is now facing an elevated charge of first-degree murder, according to the District Attorney’s Office.

Quavarre Rogers, 27, was arrested and charged with second-degree murder after a Beale Street shooting left 52-year-old Damein Hawkins dead on March 17. Rogers’ bond was initially set at $750,000.

The charges against Rogers were previously dropped in General Sessions Court on April 10, due to lack of prosecution. The DA’s Office says they “promptly escalated the matter” and presented it to a grand jury the next day, which resulted in an indictment.

A warrant was issued for Rogers’s arrest, and on Tuesday, he was taken back into custody in Olive Branch, Mississippi.

The initial charge of second-degree murder was elevated to first-degree murder. He is also facing possession of a prohibited weapon charge.

Rogers is now awaiting extradition from Mississippi. His bond is set at $1 million.
