Man accused of trying to hit Darlington County deputies’ vehicles during chase

DARLINGTON COUNTY, S.C. (WBTW) — A man is facing several charges after he hit another vehicle with his own and allegedly tried to hit multiple law enforcement vehicles during a chase, the Darlington County Sheriff’s Office said Friday.

Michael Harris is charged with resisting arrest with a deadly weapon, first-degree domestic violence, driving under suspension, operating an uninsured vehicle, operating an unregistered vehicle, failure to stop for a blue light and malicious injury to property.

Darlington County deputies responded to a home on Ousleydale Road on Thursday for domestic-related call about an unwanted person refusing to leave, the sheriff’s office said. When they arrived, Harris allegedly used his own vehicle to hit another’s and then fled.

Deputies tried conducting a traffic stop, but Harris did not stop and a chase ensued, according to the sheriff’s office. During the chase, Harris allegedly tried to hit multiple law enforcement vehicles.

Because of Harris’ “total disregard for the public’s safety,” spike strips were deployed and his vehicle was eventually pitted by law enforcement. Harris then allegedly tried fleeing on foot but was caught.

Harris was booked into the W. Glenn Campbell Detention Center at about 11 a.m. Thursday, online records show. As of this writing, his bond had not been set. Hartsville police assisted in his arrest.
