LOXAHATCHEE GROVES — A 77-year-old Loxahatchee Groves man sustained life-threatening injuries Thursday afternoon after the golf cart he was driving collided with a sport utility vehicle near the intersection of 46th Road North and Royal Palm Beach Boulevard, police said Saturday.

Palm Beach County sheriff's deputies say that the golf-cart driver, who was not identified, ran through a stop sign at about 2:30 p.m. Thursday, colliding with a northbound Acura SUV driven by a 38-year-old man. The SUV driver, who also was not identified, attempted to avoid a collision but was unable to do so, deputies said.

The front of the car slammed into the left side of the golf cart. The 77-year-old man was thrown from the cart as it overturned, sustaining critical injuries. The SUV driver was unharmed, deputies said.

No further details on the golf cart driver's condition were available Saturday.

Each year, there are approximately 13,000 golf cart-related accidents that require emergency room visits, and that number is rising, according to data compiled by the U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission. Many of those accidents have occurred in Florida, which has more than a 1,000 golf courses, according to the National Golf Foundation.

Golf carts aren’t just being driven on golf courses; they are also used as a form of transportation.
