Man, 29, airlifted from petroleum oil tank ship miles off San Diego coast

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — A 29-year-old man experiencing a medical emergency on a ship was airlifted by the U.S. Coast Guard Wednesday.

According to the local sector of the Coast Guard, a distress call came in around 1:30 p.m. reporting the medical emergency.

Watchstanders at the Joint Harbor Operations Center determined that the man required immediate higher-level medical care.

At that point, Sector San Diego launched an Air Station Jayhawk Helicopter crew with a Specialized Trauma Assistance Team medic to retrieve and transport the patient ashore.

The man, whose identity was not released, was retrieved from a petroleum oil tank ship that was located about 160 miles off the San Diego coast.

The aircrew landed at Sector San Diego around 4:30 p.m. and successfully transferred the patient to awaiting Emergency Medical Services. He was reported to be in stable condition.
