Mama June takes the lead and proposes to her boyfriend: 'Us women have to step up and grab what we want, right?'

Not every girl dreams of having a traditional wedding, or of even walking down the aisle at all. And while reality star Mama June says she was a woman who fit into that category, she’s still taken a bold (and spur-of-the-moment) leap to make things official with her man.

The new season of her current series Mama June: From Not to Hot comes with a new beau — one who has inspired Mama June, whose real name is June Shannon, to put a ring on it. Taking to the BUILD stage in New York City on Monday, she talked about what changed and brought her to consider marriage with her current boyfriend, Geno.

“Never in a million years would I think the word ‘marriage’ and ‘Mama June’ would come in the same sentence,” Shannon admitted. “But I mean, like really, Geno’s got me actually, like, thinking about it. And it’s crazy. It’s 2018, so us women have to step up and grab what we want, right?”

After making her debut on TLC’s hit series Toddlers and Tiaras over six years ago, Shannon has starred in a couple of her own reality shows. And while attention has long been focused on her daughter, Honey Boo Boo, it was difficult for producers to ignore the made-for-TV drama that, for example, surrounded her past relationship with her children’s father, who goes by the nickname “Sugar Bear.”

On Monday, she spoke about the importance of women taking the engagement process into their own hands, instead of waiting for their boyfriend to make a move.

As the show returns for the second part of Season 2 on Friday, Shannon is both excited and anxious for people to see all of their crazy family moments. And she hopes that audiences might even learn something from the spontaneous proposal.
