Pacific Beach reopens after sewage spill

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Tens of thousands of gallons of sewage spilled into the ocean in Pacific Beach Friday, temporarily closing the area to swimming and surfing.

Around 25,000 gallons of sewage was reported to have entered the ocean Friday, according to San Diego County’s Beach Beach and Bay Water Quality Monitoring Program. The water in that area has since reopened, according to the county.

A water closure was in place Friday from the shoreline at Missouri Street in Pacific Beach, north to Loring Street and south to Hornblend Street. The county says sewage contamination signs were posted in impacted areas.

Officials confirmed to FOX 5 on Monday the sewage spill was caused by a nearby vandalized sewer manhole.

Just recently, the water around the Cabrillo National Monument in Point Loma was closed in late February after a sewage spill.

There are currently closures in place in South Bay at the Imperial Beach shoreline, Tijuana Slough shoreline, Silver Strand shoreline and the Coronado shoreline.

Sewage in Tijuana River Valley is the ‘worst it’s ever been’

Those closures have been ongoing this winter and in the past. During the heavy rain and widespread flooding on Jan. 22, 14.5 billion gallons of water tainted with raw sewage made its way into the United States. The contaminated water is even impacting in-water training at the brand-new Navy Seals facility.

A general rain advisory was in place for all San Diego County coastal waters through March 10 due to urban runoff. Swimmers and surfers be advised that bacteria levels can be higher following rain, especially near storm drains, creeks, rivers and lagoon outlets.
