Mother caught in exchange of gunfire flips car near Oakland high school

OAKLAND, Calif. (KRON) — A woman and her daughter were caught in a crossfire shortly before 8 a.m. near Bishop O’Dowd High School in Oakland. According to her husband, the woman tried to drive away but her SUV was struck by another vehicle and flipped on its side.

Officers were sent to the corner of Cherokee and 98th avenues in East Oakland a little after 7:30 a.m. to investigate ShotSpotter activity, police said.

A mother was behind the wheel of the vehicle with her daughter in the car about 800 feet from the high school when shots were heard ringing out. The driver of the SUV tried to speed away to safety when they were hit by another vehicle.

Police arrived on the scene and were unable to locate the driver of the second vehicle. The people in the SUV were taken to the hospital as a precaution, reportedly.

According to the woman’s husband, her and her daughter are going to be OK.

It is unclear if either vehicle had anything to do with the reported gunfire.

The incident occurred near Bishop O’Dowd High, but the school was not impacted in any way.
