TechCrunch discovered around four dozen "gov.in" website links associated with Indian states, including Bihar, Goa, Karnataka, Kerala, Mizoram and Telangana that were redirecting to online betting platforms. The scammy links were indexed by search engines, including Google, making the ads easy to find online. The redirecting websites, touted as "Asia's most popular" online betting platform and "the number one online cricket betting app in India," claim to allow betting on games, including cricket tournaments such as the Indian Premier League.
AI startup Anthropic is changing its policies to allow minors to use its generative AI systems -- in certain circumstances, at least. Announced in a post on the company's official blog Friday, Anthropic will begin letting teens and preteens use third-party apps (but not its own apps, necessarily) powered by its AI models so long as the developers of those apps implement specific safety features and disclose to users which Anthropic technologies they're leveraging. In a support article, Anthropic lists several safety measures devs creating AI-powered apps for minors should include, like age verification systems, content moderation and filtering and educational resources on "safe and responsible" AI use for minors.

This week in AI, OpenAI revealed that it's exploring how to "responsibly" generate AI porn. Announced in a document intended to peel back the curtains and gather feedback on its AI's instructions, OpenAI's new NSFW policy is intended to start a conversation about how -- and where -- the company might allow explicit images and text in its AI products, OpenAI said. "We want to ensure that people have maximum control to the extent that it doesn't violate the law or other peoples' rights," Joanne Jang, a member of the product team at OpenAI, told NPR.

OpenAI says that it's developing a tool to let creators better control how their content's used in training generative AI. The tool, called Media Manager, will allow creators and content owners to identify their works to OpenAI and specify how they want those works to be included or excluded from AI research and training. The goal is to have the tool in place by 2025, OpenAI says, as the company works with "creators, content owners and regulators" toward a standard -- perhaps through the industry steering committee it recently joined.
Interest in male birth control has increased in the past few years, especially since the U.S. overturned Roe vs. Wade, which protected a woman's right to have an abortion. Since then, states have tried to make abortion nearly impossible, prompting an increased look at contraceptives to allow both men and women to have more control over family planning. This conversation has led to the topic of male birth control — something doctors haven't quite mastered until now, perhaps.

Threads users can now exert more control over who can quote their posts. This builds on a feature that already allows Threads users to limit who can reply to their posts (competing services like X and Bluesky offer similar reply controls). Threads outlined its plans for quote controls last month, and last night Adam Mosseri — who leads both Threads and Instagram for parent company Meta — announced that the feature is available to all users.

Apple finally updated its App Store guidelines to allow global developers to host retro game emulators on iOS. Now, you don't need to jailbreak your iPhone or download any sketchy software -- you can get a sophisticated emulator right in the palm of your hand for free on the App Store. No one is more vindicated by this shift in Apple's policy than Riley Testut, the developer who made GBA4iOS about a decade ago when he was in high school (when he released GBA4iOS, I showed half of my AP Statistics class how to play Pokémon on their phones during class -- sorry, Mr. Cinelli).
