Maine authorities still investigating wreck that killed Benjamin Kellogg, 9, of Hopedale

Police in Maine are continuing to investigate a fatal crash that took the life of a 9-year-old Hopedale boy.

Benjamin M. Kellogg, 9 died March 9 in a crash in Rumford, Maine, after a day of skiing at Sunday River with his family.

The youth was one of two passengers in a car driven by the boy's father, Matthew Kellogg, 42, of Hopedale. A 5-year-old boy was also in the vehicle. The two remained hospitalized with serious injuries Tuesday, according to Rumford police.

The driver of the second car, F. Michael Piveronas of Rumford, is also hospitalized, according to police.

Police in Rumford said Tuesday that there are no updates to the investigation.

Ben was a third-grade student at Hopedale Memorial School, where he excelled at math, according to his obituary. He had proudly completed skiing White Heat, his first ever Double Black Diamond run, earlier in the day, his obituary said.

In addition to his father, Ben leaves his mother, Michaela Kellogg; two brothers, Samuel and William; his paternal grandparents, Robert and Katherine Kellogg of Rumford, and his maternal grandparents, Thomas and Carol Ward of Cumberland, R.I.

A funeral Mass is planned for 1 p.m. Saturday at the Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church, 187 Hopedale St., Hopedale.

There are no calling hours. Burial is private. Meader and Son Funeral Home in Rumford is handling arrangements.
