Mahomet-Seymour hires former Champaign officer as SRO

MAHOMET, Ill. (WCIA) — There’s a new face to keep students safe at the Mahomet-Seymour school district.

The school district announced on Monday that Officer Jeff Thomas is now on duty as the school resource officer. He’s been training for the last month, visiting buildings and meeting with students ahead of his official starting date. On Monday, he started his service as a guest speaker for the Youth Leadership Club at Lincoln Trail Elementary School, sharing his background and answering questions.

Retired Champaign officer receives Meritorious Service Medal

Thomas’ background includes 26 years of service in the Champaign Police Department. During that time, he received eight departmental commendations awards, three lifesaving awards and the Medal of Valor for saving three children from a fire. He retired last year and received an additional award — the Meritorious Service Medal.
