Madison Central's Class of 2024 celebrates graduation

May 24—Despite stormy weather, spirits were high as Madison Central High School's graduation was delayed until 9:30 p.m. Thursday night.

Madison County District's Public Information Officer Erin Stewart reported that the ceremony was "awesome," despite the inconveniences of a weather delay, and praised the class of 2024, saying, "Their challenges have been unique and they have not wavered."

"This graduating class was finishing 8th grade when COVID caused the widespread shutdown of schools and businesses," said Stewart. "They began high school in masks on a hybrid schedule after a full 9 weeks of virtual learning. They navigated pandemic protocols in nearly every aspect of their experience until their junior year. Non-traditional is their normal! Central's graduates and the staff made one more very non-traditional memory last night."

The bleachers were packed as loved ones watched their graduates walk out onto the football field to Taylor Swift's "Long Live" and Board of Education Division 1 Representative Samantha Burford gave graduates a send-off.

"I would encourage you to remember the good times, the great times, and the many memories made at Madison Central and to always focus on your accomplishments...Now's the time to go out and challenge yourself. Discover your passion, work hard, and serve others. Class of 2024, you are unstoppable and you will continue to succeed. We are so very proud of you," she declared.

Madison Southern's graduation was held on Friday evening. Coverage will be in Tuesday's edition of the Register.
