Lower Hudson Valley under flood watch as up to 3.5 inches of rain expected this weekend

A flood watch is in effect for the Lower Hudson Valley all day Saturday.

The National Weather Service says a flood watch will be in effect for Westchester, Rockland and Putnam counties from 8 a.m. Saturday to 2 a.m. Sunday. Northern New Jersey, southern New York and southern Connecticut could also be affected.

The area is expected to see between 2.5 to 3.5 inches of rain throughout the day Saturday, leading to a risk of floods at rivers, small streams and low-lying coastal areas.

Meteorologist John Cristantello said drivers should avoid driving in flood-prone areas Saturday and should stay off the roads unless travel is necessary.

"We always like to remind people to turn around and don't drown," he said.

St. Patrick's Day: Yonkers parade postponed by rainy weather forecast

Among events postponed by the rain is the Yonkers St. Patrick's Day Parade, which was rescheduled for April 6.

Rain is expected to end by early Sunday morning, so the second half of the weekend should stay dry.

However, next week looks like it will bring even more rain, with storms predicted Wednesday into Thursday.
