Low voter turnout in Laurel; Trump, Biden, Rogers win big

May 21—With only three to four selections in the primary election, expected low voter turnout proved correct in Laurel County.

Donald Trump and President Joe Biden took in the biggest numbers in the Presidential election, while 5th District Congressman Hal Rogers earned another boost on the local front.

State Representatives Timmy Truett and Tom O'Dell Smith were also on the ballot for some Laurel County precincts, with both getting the highest votes in their respective races.

Overall, voter turnout in Laurel was 11.8%, according to Laurel County Clerk Tony Brown.

There were 4,667 ballots cast on Election Day. Absentee Mail-ins numbered 280, Early Excused, 25; Early No Excuse, 795, for a total of 5,767 ballots cast of the 48,710 registered voters in the county.

Voter turnout for the November General Election is expected to be over 50% as the Presidential elections always draw more voters to the polls than other elections, including state and local races.
