Louisiana Shrimp Association reacts to proposed act that aims to help industry

(KLFY) — Louisiana Shrimp Association President Acy Cooper has worked tirelessly to be a voice for Louisiana shrimpers whose livelihoods have been derailed by imported products. After hearing about the introduction of the Save Our Shrimpers Act of 2024, he is hoping this can be a step in the right direction for the once thriving industry.

“We commend on it. We need more legislation,” Cooper said.

If passed, the act would prohibit federal funds to international financial institutions subsidizing foreign activity relating to shrimp farming, processing or exporting to the United States.

“When they fund them, the currency difference between that country and the state, the state maybe two or three times different. That’s how they make their money,” Cooper said.

The legislation introduced would trigger an investigation into the U.S. Government accountability office and require an annual report to Congress to track if executive directors are within compliance of the law. Cooper said this is exactly what the organization has been fighting years for.

“The federal government should hold their feet to the fire when it comes to people’s health,” Cooper said. “I think we can survive, but until that point, we’re not going to survive because everything is stacked against us.”
