Louisiana DOTD wants people to drive safely in work zone areas

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — A National Work Zone Awareness Week campaign aims to make drivers aware of safety when driving through construction work zones.

According to National Work Zone Safety Information Clearinghouse data, there were 895 work-zone-related fatalities nationwide in 2022.

“Ten of those were in Louisiana and so it is a major issue and want everybody to just pay attention and to consider themselves and others whenever they’re traveling through a construction site,” DOTD Secretary Joe Donahue said.

The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development is highlighting safety precautions throughout this week.

“Stay alert, pay attention to where you’re going. Of course, don’t drink and drive. Use your seatbelt, every day they just become that much more important when you’re traveling through a construction zone,” Donahue said.

Louisiana State Police Superintendent Col. Robert Hodges said every life is important, adding, “Our goal as Executive Director Lisa Freeman said is to have no injury and no loss of life in Louisiana in any work zone.”

In honor of those killed in work zones, DOTD set up a safety cone memorial in front of its headquarters.
