Loudoun County propane company allowed to resume deliveries after Sterling house explosion

LOUDOUN COUNTY, Va. (DC News Now) — The Loudoun County Fire Marshal allowed Southern States, a petroleum company in the area, to resume deliveries on Tuesday, three weeks after the restrictions were put in place.

Loudoun County Fire and Rescue (LCFR) investigators had implemented the restrictions amid an ongoing investigation into a house explosion in February that killed a Sterling firefighter and injured 13 other people.

The Loudoun County Fire and Rescue Fire Marshal’s Office (LCFR-FMO) determined that a 500-gallon underground propane tank caused the explosion on Feb. 16.

On March 12, LCFR-FMO announced that it was working with Southern States Cooperative, Inc. to update the company’s fire prevention code-related information. Until that was complete, all of the company’s petroleum deliveries in the county were suspended.

In a news release on Tuesday, April 2, LCFR-FMO said that the necessary information had been updated and that regular propane delivery was expected to start that same day.

Officials said that the investigation was still ongoing. Southern States was still working with investigators.
