Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department honoring K9 for bravery

A Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department K9 is being honored for his courage during a high-risk encounter with a suspect last week.

K9 Kjeld “Kid” and his handler, Deputy Stephen E. Williams, were dispatched to search for an assault with a deadly weapon suspect in Compton on the evening of April 17, LASD said.

The sheriff’s department posted an update to social media regarding Kid’s condition the morning after he was shot, saying that he was “resting comfortably” and that the suspect was taken into custody.

Before Monday’s press conference honoring Kid and his deputy handler, L.A. County Sheriff Robert Luna commended the Kid’s heroic actions, emphasizing the pup’s “vital role” within the department.

“There is no doubt [that] the actions of K9 Kid saved the lives of both deputies and the suspect in this incident,” Sheriff Luna said. “K9 Kid’s heroic actions are a clear example of his vital role in law enforcement during high-risk incidents.”

The identity of the assault with a deadly weapon suspect has not been released.
