Lorain man charged with murder, leading police chase: Investigators

LORAIN, Ohio (WJW) – A Lorain man faces murder charges after a woman was shot and killed in the city on Tuesday.

According to the Lorain Police Department, officers were called to the area of E. 31st Street and Pearl Avenue for reported gunshots late Tuesday evening.

When they got there, officers found bystanders trying to help a woman near the roadway. The victim suffered from multiple gunshot wounds, according to a police report.

The victim, identified as Lupita Rivera-Lopez, was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

The suspect’s vehicle was spotted near E. 21st Street and Access Drive in Lorain, the police report said.

As officers tried to make a traffic stop, investigators say a passenger jumped out of the car and ran on foot. According to Lorain police, the suspect had a gun on him.

After a chase, officers caught the suspect, identified as Dale Cantu, of Lorain. He was taken to the Lorain County Jail, facing murder, obstruction and weapons charges.

Officers also recovered a handgun from the scene.

According to Lorain police, investigators aren’t looking for other suspects at this time.

“Our thoughts and condolences are offered to the friends and family of the victim,” the police department said in a media release.

The case remains under investigation. Anyone with information on the fatal shooting is asked to call the Lorain Police Detective Bureau at (440) 204-2105.
