Looking for Rockies tickets? Here’s how to avoid a scam

DENVER (KDVR) — Baseball fans are not the only ones excited about the Colorado Rockies home opener on Friday. Consumer watchdog groups warn that scammers gear up at the start of the season as they look to make and sell counterfeit tickets.

Buy from a reputable ticket seller

Danny Katz, executive director of the Colorado Public Interest Research Group, or CoPIRG, told FOX31 that the box office, team website or credible ticket seller are the only places deemed to be safe to make ticket purchases.

“Avoid individuals that you don’t know who are selling tickets and instead look for tickets on resale sites that are reputable,” Katz said. Those websites include Ticketmaster, StubHub and Vivid Seats.

CoPIRG said the National Association of Ticket Brokers website features a list of legitimate ticket sellers.

Examine the ticket seller’s website address

When searching for tickets online, carefully examine the website address in the browser window.

“It’s possible you might find a site that looks like ColoradoRockies.com and you go, that must be the site to buy these tickets. And all of a sudden you don’t realize that the ‘i’ was actually a (number) 1, and so it’s actually a fake website in there that’s just there to get your credit card information,” Katz said.

Use a credit card when buying tickets

CoPIRG recommends using a credit card for added protection when buying tickets.

“If it turns out to be a counterfeit ticket, your money is gone. If you use a credit card, there’s at least some way to potentially get your money back if you buy a counterfeit ticket,” Katz said.

Don’t post on social media

Thieves can counterfeit tickets by using a picture of the barcode, so it is important to avoid posting pictures of your ticket on social media.
