Locals’ opinions on possible TikTok ban

FRUITA, Colo. (KREX) — The U.S. House of Representatives just passed a bill looking to ban TikTok – now it goes to the Senate.

Representatives believe the Chinese company ByteDance, which owns TikTok, holds a dangerous amount of power and leverage within America.

But how does the Grand Valley feel about this possible ban? Western Slope Now went down to Fruita to find out.

Local massage therapist Mical Kramer believes the problem stretches beyond just national security. He says young girls are experiencing higher rates of depression and self-harm because of Tik Tok and similar platforms.

And local Aaron Seibert thinks the problem stretches beyond social media as a whole…saying it’s hard to tell what is an actual person or an automated bot on the other side of the screen.

Realtor Jeffrey Hoffman says even if this ban goes through, it won’t be crippling, a new social media platform will just take its place.

Grand Junction President of Chamber of Commerce Candace Carnahan agrees – it shouldn’t be crippling for businesses who use it to advertise either.

But even if other platforms prevail, where do voters draw the line…once the government has the power to ban one app?

Only time will tell.
