Local students participate in 2024 Masonry Field Day

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. (WJHL) — Students in the region attended the 2024 Masonry Field Day hosted by Creative Masonry Incorporated on Tuesday.

More than 800 students and vendors were at the event. Activities included brick, stone and block laying, scaffolding and more.

President of Creative Masonry Incorporated Fred Campbell said the event aims at showing students there’s an option besides college.

“So this is my way of giving back,” Campbell said. “Just to show kids that there is an option besides college.”

“And you know, all these kids out here, 820 kids today, they’re not all going to go to college,” Campbell said. “They’re not all gonna want to go to college. So what’s your alternative? [A] factory or restaurants or get in the trades and make some real money? I mean, I’ve got guys in their twenties making, you know, with benefits and also making over 40 an hour.”

Campbell said creative masonry has been his passion his whole life.

“[Creative] masonry has been my passion all my life. I love laying brick from day one, and this is my way of giving back. I’ve been very blessed throughout the years. You know, I’ve won the SPEC MIX Bricklayer 500 three times. I’ve been in a lot of magazines this year. I was the first ever Hall of Famer award recipient.”

The event runs until 3 p.m. at the Appalachian Fairgrounds in Gray.
