Local soldier calls on servicemembers to join Memorial Day display at Patrick Henry Mall

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) – A local soldier is calling on other servicemembers to join him at Patrick Henry Mall on Monday for a Memorial Day display.

On Monday, service members will stand guard for 10-minute intervals from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. beside a display of the Battlefield cross and service flag in the center court. This display has been at the mall for the past eight years.

Sgt. Matthew Weston states he wants every military branch represented.

“If there are any active duty or reserve service members in the peninsula area or wider viewing area that they’re welcome to participate. And like I said, the hours are from 10 to 2 at 10 minute intervals,” Weston said. “We stand guard and otherwise we’re just basically talking with each other or talking with mall patrons that they may inquire as to what we’re doing or why we’re there.”

Local high school Junior ROTC cadets will also participate.

At noon, there will be a short ceremony where Taps will be played, followed by a moment of silence.

“We just want people to remember that Memorial Day is, set apart from Veteran’s Day. Generally, service members reflect on those friends that they’ve lost in battle,” Weston said. “Also, family members have loved ones that that have died and past wars. And we just want to remember that instead of saying ‘thank you for your service’, just sort of reflect on what Memorial Day is about. Those we’ve lost.”
