Local pediatric clinic taking part in Minority Health Month

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WJBF) – April is Minority Health Month which aims to improve the health of racial and ethnic minority communities and reduce health disparities. A local pediatric clinic is helping achieve this.

Christ Community Health Services helps to not only improve minority healthcare adversities, but also make expensive medical needs more affordable for those in need.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services says the theme of this year’s Minority Health Month is “Be The Source For Better Health.” A theme Dr. Charles Scarborough and his team have been practicing for the past year.

“What I feel like God has done here is create a safe place where they can get quality, affordable healthcare,” Director of Pediatrics at Christ Community Health Dr. Charles Scarborough said.

Augusta’s Hispanic population continues to grow.  Christ Community Health aims to make sure that population knows the resources available to them.

“Aquí nos abren la puerta para poder nuestros hijos será atendidos y poder tener salud,” dijo Banegas.

“Here, they open the door for us, for our children to be served and to have health,” Banegas said.

Banegas’ oldest son Suffered from a rare disease that causes muscle inflammation and a rash. She says it nearly killed him.

“… Le hicieron todos los exámenes aquí y ya los días le detectaron que mi hijo tenía un enfermedad que se llama dermatomiositis juvenil que solo se detecta en cuatro jóvenes en un millón,” dijo Banegas.

“…They did all of his exams here and the days, they detected that my son had an illness called Juvenile dermatomyositis that is only detected in children, one in four million,” Banegas said.

Stories like Banegas’ are why the Christ Community Health staff makes sure those who are uninsured, or underinsured have access to quality healthcare in a place that welcomes everyone.

“They do help people without health insurance, without resources to go to like a good doctor, nice, well regular medical care…,” nurse Ana Ortiz said.

“I think that God is using our clinic in a beautiful way and hopefully continues to do that in this city, but it’s humbling to see how much God can use us in people that are at risk and in need,” Dr. Scarborough said.

Christ Community Health offers dental, primary, and pediatric care for those living in the CSRA. You can visit their website.
