Local organization share prevention tips for National Animal Poison Prevention Week

Columbus, Ga (WRBL)— The third week of March is National Animal Poison Prevention Week. Pet owners nationwide are reminded of the potential dangers lurking within their homes. WRBL spoke with Courtney Pierce, the Executive Director of Paws Humane, to shed light on the common hazards that pets face and how to safeguard against them.

According to Pierce, household supplies and pest control traps are among the leading culprits behind pet poisoning incidents. These everyday items, often innocuous to humans, can pose grave risks to our beloved animal companions.

Recognizing the signs of poisoning is crucial for pet owners. Pierce says symptoms include excessive drooling, nosebleeds, vomiting, and loss of consciousness.

Pierce offered practical advice on pet-proofing one’s home to mitigate the risk of accidental poisoning.

“You want to keep all your medications, cleaning supplies, and everything out of reach, similar to how you would child-proof your home for a toddler,” she advised. Additionally, securing trash cans and removing toxic houseplants such as lilies, daffodils, and gardenias from reach are essential precautions,” shared Pierce.

If you have any reason to suspect your pet has been exposed to or ingested something toxic, please contact your veterinarian or the Animal Poison Control Center’s 24-hour hotline at (888) 426-4435 for immediate assistance.
