Local Cattleman's Association receives state awards

Apr. 19—MOULTRIE — The Colquitt County Cattleman's Association received awards at the 62nd Annual Georgia Cattleman's Association Convention, in Columbus.

The local association won an award recognizing the "Largest GCA Net Increase" in membership by a local chapter in Georgia and also an award recognizing the "Greatest Percentage Membership Increase" by a local chapter in Georgia.

Harry Thompson, who is a former vice president of the Georgia Cattleman's Association Region 14, said that there was a 75% increase in membership over the past year, giving the Colquitt County Cattleman's Association 112 members total.

As part of the awards, the chapter also received a cattle chute that members can borrow and use, for free, especially, when they have youth getting ready for cow shows or to use at the cow shows. It will be housed at the Colquitt County Extension Ag Complex in the care of the extension agents, Thompson said.

According to the Georgia Cattlemen's Association's website, the grassroots organization dates back to 1961, representing the voices of nearly 5,500 cattle producers throughout Georgia. It works, on behalf of its members, through legislative and regulatory actions that cover natural resource management, land-owner rights and animal health and well-being. The website also states that the Georgia Cattlemen's Association is a producer-focused, producer-led organization whose mission is to unite and advance the state's cattle industry.

"We are proud of our structure as a grass roots organization and the 75 county and area cattlemen's associations that help us share the message of the Georgia cattle industry," states the association's website.
