Little Rock Zoo preparing for animals reacting to eclipse

LITTLE ROCK, Ark.-  The Little Rock Zoo is one of the many places hosting an event during the Solar Eclipse, but its event will have a difference.

Zoo officials are not only anticipating reactions to the eclipse from people but from the animals as well.

Dr. Sarah Stoneburg is the Senior Staff Veterinarian at Little Rock Zoo. She says it’s been years since she’s witnessed an eclipse amongst animals, but she and other staff members will be watching out for one thing: “How the animals are going to respond to the eclipse,” she said.

Stoneburg says the reactions amongst the animals will vary, some will think that dark skies mean it’s time to sleep, while others are expected to become more active.

“Some of our birds are crepuscular animals so they’ll start roosting in the middle of the day, we’ll see some changes when it comes to natural circadian rhythms,” Stoneburg said.

She says zoo leaders will be on the lookout and want guests to participate as part of the Citizens Science Project.

“We want them to Look at the animals and report any issues that they may see, or even any weird behaviors,” said Stoneburg

She said this would also let them know which animals to medicate if needed.

“We’re anticipating that not to happen but we’re always on standby if something does happen,” Stoneburg explained.
