Rider Prods Angry Rattlesnake Blocking Trail With Bike Tire

One thing that is always important to remember when out riding bikes is that we are in animals' homes and that above all else, we need to be respectful of that fact.

Here is a video from years back of a mountain biker encountering a rattlesnake and responding accordingly.

So, for some people - those who ride bikes in the high desert prairie, Australia, or the American Southwest - running into rattlesnakes can be a daily occurrence, and dealing with that is no problem. But, for those who don't bump into them all that frequently, i.e. those visiting the southwest to ride, a crash course on how to safely deal with rattlesnakes is not a bad idea.

Keeping your distance is a good call for starters. Finding something like a long stick or, like in the video, your bike to shoo them off the trail is the right approach. If it's possible to go around do that. If it's impassable, there is nothing wrong with turning back.

Just be safe out there.
