Lily-Rose Depp went stylish but relaxed in classic black Chanel slingback shoes at the luxury brand’s cruise 2024 show in Marseille, France today.
The model is often spotted wearing the brand, having been an ambassador since 2015. She’s worn Chanel slingbacks before while walking around Los Angeles with friends, but has also worn other styles from the brand like trainers.
The celebrity sat front row at the outdoor presentation. Held on the rooftop of Le Corbusier’s Cite Radieuse, the showing is the latest in Virginie Viard’s traveling collections. Others in attendance included Sadie Sink, Marion Cotillard and Nathalie Emmanuel.
About the shoe
Depp naturally wore Chanel for the occasion. The 24-year-old slipped into a pair of black-on-black shoes that retail for $1100 and feature the brand’s famed interlocking C logo on the 3.5-inch blocked heel. Most of the shoe, including the strap that creates the slingback, is made of black lambskin. The almond-shaped toe of the style is made of grosgrain. Chanel lovers can also purchase a pair of the same design in white with a black toe.
Chanel and the History of the Slingback
There’s a long history between the slingback silhouette and Chanel. Created by Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel herself in 1957, the style was often two-tone in beige and black or black and white. After Coco’s death in 1971, Karl Lagerfeld took over designing and continued the brand’s iterations on slingbacks. Following his death in 2019, Virginie Viard became the brand’s creative director and the shoes have remained a staple of the brand. They are one of many contributions Chanel has made to the fashion industry, where it remains one of the largest and most successful luxury brands today.
Chanel owns Massaro Paris, a bespoke atelier which creates all of the company’s couture footwear. Founded in 1894, Massaro Paris didn’t begin working with the Chanel brand until the 1950s. Massaro was responsible for deciding to put elasticized leather on the slingback in place of a buckle.
