When Prince Harry and Meghan decided to break with convention and not name Archie’s godparents at his christening back in 2019 it was a key indication of their decision to do things differently. However, it has now been made public that the couple chose one godparent whose family relationship with the royal family goes back decades.

The 7th Duke of Westminster, Hugh Grosvenor, has been revealed as Archie’s godfather amidst interest in his society wedding coming up next summer. He will wed Olivia Henson at Chester Cathedral on June 7, 2024 following their engagement in April.

Discussion over the guest list has put the spotlight on Hugh’s relationship with the royals. He was publicly announced as one of Prince George’s seven godparents in 2013 when his father was the 6th Duke of Westminster and he held the title Earl Grosvenor. The King and Queen and Prince William and Kate are expected to be guests at his wedding but it has been reported that Prince Harry and Meghan will not go—with reports differing over whether they politely declined or have not been invited.

The Duke of Westminster is one of the richest people in Britain and his family has been rubbing shoulders with royalty since Queen Victoria created the title in 1874 and bestowed it on his ancestor. Hugh’s mother Natalia is godmother to Prince William, and Princess Diana was godmother to one of his sisters Lady Edwina.

Harry and Meghan have never publicly named Archie’s godparents following his christening in the private chapel at Windsor Castle in July 2019. However, during their Netflix documentary last year the Sussexes did choose to share that actor Tyler Perry is Lilibet’s godfather. The family stayed in his house when they first moved to California.

Town & Country has reached out to reps for the Sussexes and the Duke of Westminster over reports surrounding the Duke of Westminster’s wedding.
