Lifeguards return to beaches in Brighton and Hove
Lifeguards have returned to the beaches in Brighton and Hove.
The seven lifeguard towers between Kemp Town and Hove opened on Saturday for the start of the bank holiday weekend.
Brighton & Hove City Council, which funds the service, said that last year its team saved the lives of 30 people and helped find more than 90 missing people.
The council urged anyone swimming in the sea to do so inside areas marked by red and yellow flags on the beach, as these are the areas patrolled by lifeguards that are considered safe to swim.
The locations opening on Saturday are:
Kemp Town beach, Brighton
East of the Palace Pier, Brighton
Albion beach, Brighton
Central Brighton beach
West Pier Beach, Brighton
Hove Lawns beach
King Alfred beach, Hove
The above beaches are patrolled by lifeguards between 10:00 and 17:30 BST, apart from the King Alfred beach which is patrolled between 10:00 and 18:00.
A further three locations will be patrolled by lifeguards between 20 July and 8 September, when children are on their school summer holidays. They are:
Saltdean beach
Rottingdean beach
West Hove beach
Councillor Birgit Miller said: “We are also pleased to be working in partnership with the volunteers from Brighton RNLI this year, sharing knowledge and training to help save lives at sea.”
