Letters to the Editor: This is Bibi’s war now

The United States has been a strong supporter of Israel for many decades.

Currently, however, Israeli prime minister Bibi Netanyahu is relentlessly demolishing the territory of Gaza and slaughtering her citizens. This is in defiance of the Biden administration, and using weapons provided by the United States. Bibi refuses to stop and is expanding the conflict by attacking Iran’s embassy in Syria.

Bibi is prolonging the war to protect himself politically and legally.

The carnage began on Oct. 7: Hamas militants overran Israeli military bases and civilian communities, killed 1,139 Israelis and foreign nationals and took 253 Israelis and foreigners captive.

Retaliation has now become genocide.

Netanyahu’s forces have massacred 33,000 Palestinians. They have:

  • Destroyed 85% of Gaza’s homes and buildings

  • Destroyed public infrastructure including water and sanitation

  • Destroyed hospitals and health facilities

  • Deprived Palestinians of food, water and fuel

  • Deprived Gazans of medicine and medical supplies

Famine is closing its grip on over 80% of Gazans.

Israel’s legitimate defense has turned into crimes against humanity.

Now consider this: Whenever the war stops, Netanyahu will face:

  • Public anger for his failure to protect Israel

  • Demands for elections to replace him

  • Scrutiny of his execution of the war

  • Resumption of legal proceedings against him

This is Bibi’s war now.

Who is the United States supporting? Israel or Bibi?

Congrats, ski team!

I’d like to congratulate the PHS Boys Ski Team for their fifth consecutive State Championship. Gentlemen, you’ve proven that Petoskey continues to be a multi-generational powerhouse on the slopes. Nothing better than bringing the State Championship home at Nub’s — it’s been fun comparing your team photo to the one from my senior year in 2004, 20 years ago this season. Thank you for keeping the tradition of winning alive.

And to the dominant Marley Spence, “congratulations” simply doesn’t suffice. You are a legend in a program that is legendary in and of itself — you’re a GOAT, a once-in-a-generation talent. I skied with Eric Behan during this five-title streak … we’ve been waiting for the next Jedi, but you surpassed any and all hopes. Stay fast in college!
