Leon County Schools set to reopen Wednesday following tornado damage; buses will run

Leon County's public schools and buses will be up and running as normal Wednesday after instructional school days were cancelled following power outages and severe weather that hit the area last Friday morning.

"Thank you to our parents and our community for being so patient and understanding with us as we navigate extreme weather conditions," Superintendent Rocky Hanna said in a post on social media.

After three tornadoes rattled the Tallahassee area, Hanna said staff and students were still "shell-shocked," guiding the choice to close schools Tuesday after a meeting with the National Weather Service, Leon County Emergency Management and school principals.

The district is still in talks with the state's education department to determine state assessment make-up exam dates and the possibility of waiving instructional hours for seniors who are anticipating graduating at the end of the month, district spokesperson Chris Petley said.

The district decides to close and reopen schools based on advice from the National Weather Service, with whom they have been in constant communication since Thursday.

Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate make-up exams are designated by the College Board and the IB organization. All students taking these tests should contact their school for rescheduled exam dates.
