Leesburg names former captain and longtime public servant as new police chief

The city of Leesburg has a new police chief.

Effective Tuesday, former Police Capt. Joe Iozzi will now lead the Leesburg Police Department, replacing former chief and new Deputy City Manager Rob Hicks.

According to a city press release, "Iozzi has demonstrated the importance of direct leadership, with accessibility and accountability to all citizens. His belief in community-oriented policing has successfully developed cohesive relationships. He has a diverse understanding of policing concepts critical to all community-driven objectives."

In recent years, Iozzi served as the department's public information officer. As a command officer since 2014, Iozzi also led and managed officers in personnel matters, facilitated department planning, training, policy creation, budgeting and general department-related functions.

He served as bureau commander for Uniformed Services and Special Services & Investigations, and has provided service to the citizens of Leesburg since 1994.

Iozzi holds a bachelor's degree in criminal justice administration from Columbia College, and he completed the FBI National Academy’s 281st session.
