Learning how to take care of rabbits in Wilkes-Barre

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A local library is sending a word of warning to families thinking of getting a bunny as an Easter present.

At the Osterhout Library in Wilkes-Barre, a free event was held for the public on how to properly take care of a pet rabbit.

Four non-profit groups, like the SPCA, were on hand to show the public the proper way to care for a rabbit, including how you should feed, handle, and house the bunny.

The library even welcomed some furry friends on Monday.

The event comes just three weeks before Easter when many families give bunnies as a present.

Event organizers say a lot goes into taking care of a bunny, so think twice before giving it as a gift.

“The issue is ignored except for this time of year so we want people to understand hey don’t buy that rabbit, adopt if it is time for you to get a rabbit, adopt one,” said SPCA of Luzerne County Development Director Randy Lucas.

“I’ve had rabbits my entire life I’ve made all the mistakes that we now educate people about so it’s a learn from our mistakes so you don’t have to,” Alicia Eroh, President of Miss Bunny’s Menagerie in Allentown said.

Due to bunny dumping and overpopulation of rabbits, shelters all across NEPA are at capacity.
