LCSD to mark National Drug Take Back Day

Apr. 26—Lauderdale County residents with old prescription medications will have a safe way to dispose of them as sheriff's deputies take part Saturday in National Prescription Drug Take Back Day.

Sheriff Ward Calhoun said deputies, along with members of the East Mississippi Drug Task Force, will be at Sam's Club from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. for residents to stop by and drop off expired or unused prescription drugs.

"People can clean out their old prescriptions medications. Perhaps they have a family member or someone they take care of that has old prescription meds and don't know what to do with them," Calhoun said via text message. "They can bring them and we will be taking them and disposing of them properly."

National Prescription Drug Take Back Day is coordinated by the Drug Enforcement Agency as a way to take unneeded prescription drugs out of the community and reduce the opportunities for prescription drug abuse.

Since its founding, the program has removed almost 18 million pounds of medications from cities and towns nationwide.
