Lawson murder trial begins in Summers County

HINTON, WV (WVNS) — The murder trial for Steven Lawson began on Monday, March 11, 2024, in a Summers County courtroom, nearly four years after his initial arrest.

Lawson is on trial for the death and disappearance of teen Azareyiah Mitchell in 2020.

Jury selection took the entire morning, but opening statements from the prosecution began after lunch recess was ended.

The defense chose to hold their opening statements until after the prosecution rests.

Two testimonies were heard, the first from Dr. Piotr Kubiczek, the First Deputy Medical Examiner for West Virginia.

The second from Dawnie Steadman, a Professor of Forensic Anthropology at the University of Tennessee.

The trial will continue on Tuesday, March 12, 2024.
