Law Enforcement Club and JROTC help clean Sunbury parks

Apr. 23—SUNBURY — Cameron Park, the Northumberland County Historical Society grounds, Fort Augusta and the Hunter-Grant Cemetery are clean and ready for visitors after members of the Shikellamy High School Law Enforcement Club and JROTC participated in a spring cleanup event.

Shikellamy School Director Julie Brosius led the charge in coordinating Shikellamy Police Chief Shawn Williams, high school Principal Marc Freeman and Sunbury officials in an effort to get the students to participate in the cleanup event.

Brosius said she was thankful to Williams and Freeman for organizing the event.

"It is said teach your children well," Brosius said. "What an awesome teaching moment to have students involved with community service on Earth Day. This type of participation instills a work ethic and enriches a pride in one deep down, of and for, their surroundings, topped off with a firsthand understanding of historic moments in time."

Sunbury City Clerk Jeff Wojciechowski said council and Mayor Josh Brosious were also thankful for the students.

"I would like to thank the Shikellamy School District JROTC, Law Enforcement Club, and other student volunteers for a job well done beautifying Cameron Park and Front Street," he said. "To me, today's lesson of giving back and helping the community they live in, is more valuable than any classroom lesson. These future leaders of America are a priceless asset to us all."

Junior class President Logan Wiest, a member of the law enforcement club, said he was happy to help the city.

"It's nice to come out and give back to the community," he said.

Classmates Strohm Fatzinger, 17, and Gavyn Erb, 17, agreed.

"We got out of school and were able to help out the community," Erb said. "It was great seeing everyone pitch in."

Fatzinger said helping clean the cemetery was a good way to show pride in the community.

Williams said he and Freeman were proud of the students.

"It was such a privilege for the Law Enforcement Club to clean up," Williams said. "Our 16 students raked leaves, picked up tree limbs, trimmed, mowed and reset the American Flag grave markers. Their hard work shows and the cemetery has not looked this good in many years.

"Many hands working together is the lesson of the day. Students enjoyed listening to Principal Freeman's history lesson on the fort's purpose. Our students thoroughly enjoyed the hard work and experience."

Sunbury Mayor Josh Brosious said he was thankful for the students.

"I appreciate the students volunteering their time to help the city and it shows they are taking pride in their community and getting involved," he said.
