Laurel County Board of Education honors teachers, academic team

May 1—Students and staff were recognized before the Laurel County Board of Education last week, both with praise from board members.

The South Laurel Middle School academic team had a successful year, winning the District 44 and Region 11 championships. They then moved on the state competition in Quick Recall.

Two students, Michael Sparkman and Taylor Strunk, secured top 5 positions in individual competitions. Michael Sparkman earned 4th place in Social Studies, while Taylor Strunk received 4th place in Arts & Humanities.

Also honored were the two Laurel County School District educators selected as the London Laurel Chamber of Commerce's Teacher of the Year. Those were Jacob Moore of SLMS and John Hunt of SLHS.

Board members also voted to accept a contract with Cloyd & Associates as Independent Auditors for the 2024-2025 school year.

The board will hold its May meeting on Monday, May 13 but voted to cancel the 4th Monday meeting as it falls on Memorial Day.

New positions will be available for employment. Board members voted to re-create a Visually Impaired Teacher for the district/Garland Building, an Attendance Clerk for North Laurel High, and a Chief Information Officer for the district.

Also approved were:

—School Facilities Construction Commission's second offer of assistance of $66,109.

—Dual Credit Memorandum between Hazard Community & Technical College for 2024-2025 academic year.

—Johnson Elementary to apply for the Kentucky Bluegrass Award Grant through the Kentucky Association of School Librarians.
