Upon arrival, responding officers found Castillo with an 8-inch knife. Shoppers in the store said they saw Castillo yelling and screaming. Store security video showed the incident inside the retail establishment.

Police said Castillo ran toward Flamingo Road while officers commanded him to drop the knife. Officers were commanded by Sergeant Brett Brosnahan to use “less lethal weapon options.” Castillo then quickly closed the distance between himself and the officers, causing Brosnahan to fire his gun six times. Simultaneously, two other officers deployed “less lethal” weapons.

Body camera video recounted the deadly incident. Castillo was pronounced dead at the scene. His death represents the third fatal police shooting of 2024 for the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department.

Sgt. Brosnahan, 42, works at LVMPD’s South Central area command and has been with the department since 2009.
