Lakewood, Littleton residents clean up after weekend windstorm damages property

DENVER (KDVR) — A Colorado woman walked out of a home near Tennyson Street and Iliff Avenue Saturday night to find her vehicle crushed by a fallen spruce tree.

“My insurance company asked me to describe the damage and I said, ‘Imagine an 80-foot tall, massive tree on the car. That’s it — it’s shattered,'” Courtney said.

A group of friends were celebrating a birthday party in a home just feet from where the tree fell. They heard the loud wind but said they were surprised to see the tree toppled over.

“We were sitting down at dinner, the power was flickering and just lots of noises,” one friend recalled.

Despite extensive damage to the car, the group remains in good spirits.

“No one was injured; everyone had a pretty great attitude about it,” the friend said.

According to arborists with DLC Arbor Services, they’ve seen the majority of tree damage in Lakewood and Littleton.

“I’ve seen a lot here in the Lakewood area,” arborist Bill Johnston said. “We came up through the Littleton area. There’s a lot of power out yesterday, a lot of line issues with trees going down.”

Johnston said it’s important to water trees and keep the roots saturated when it’s dry outside. That can help prevent them from toppling over during strong winds.
