Lakeland man faces murder charges after police say he shot his husband at least 11 times

A Lakeland man has been arrested on first-degree murder charges after police say he shot his husband at least 11 times during an argument that turned physical Thursday night.

Lakeland police said in a Friday news release that they received a call about a shooting at 1689 Village Center Drive shortly before 9:30 p.m. Thursday. The caller, Gavin Miranda, 27, told police he shot his husband during an argument, according to the release.

Officers found the victim, Hugo Gomez, 30, lying face down on the living room floor with multiple gunshot wounds to his back, leg and wrist. Lakeland Fire Department and Polk County Fire Rescue arrived and pronounced Gomez dead.

Police said Miranda told the 911 operator that the couple had been fighting and the argument turned physical, with Gomez pushing him against a wall and choking him. Miranda then retrieved a gun and shot Gomez several times, emptying the clip, according to an affidavit. He then placed the gun on the bed.

Officers on the scene said they collected 14 spent shell casings and nine projectile bullets near Gomez's body. They said they counted 11 gunshot wounds in total — nine in his back, one in his wrist and one in the back of the leg. Given the direction of the bullets and marks in the floor, police said it appeared Miranda was standing over Gomez as he shot him.
