Lake County officials highlight agriculture importance, 'National Ag Day'

Apr. 5—The Lake County commissioners and Lake County Farm Bureau officials and volunteers recently extolled the regional significance and prevalence of agriculture following National Ag Day by proclaiming March 17 — 23 "National Ag Week in Lake County."

According to the board's unanimous resolution, "American agriculture is the foundation of our country....it's the backbone of a healthy and prosperous nation, made possible by the hard work of America's farms and farm families."

Bureau Organization Director Mandy Orahood noted that the measure also stands as a mark of unity.

"From the food on our tables to the clothes on our backs, agriculture touches every aspect of our lives," she said. "This event (also) serves as a vital bridge, bringing consumers and producers together to honor and appreciate the dedication of those who feed and sustain us.

"Let us join in celebration, as we cultivate awareness, foster appreciation and nurture the roots of our agricultural heritage, ensuring that it remains strong for generations to come."

According to the bureau:

—There are 214 farms in Lake County which together comprise 13,098 acres

—Agriculture is the No. 1 industry in the state, and new technology allows for more environmentally-friendly farming

—The top three agricultural sectors are greenhouse, nursery and floriculture production; farm inputs, equipment and professional services; and fruit and vegetable production

—Per farm average, the market value of products sold by Lake County farms is $344,364 per year

—20 percent of Lake County farms sell directly to consumers

—93 percent of Lake County farms are family-owned; Ohio ranks 15th (of all states) in agriculture receipts

Additionally, the National Agriculture Day program encourages every American to "understand how abundant and affordable food and fiber products are produced," and to consider career opportunities in the industry.

"Agriculture continues to play a key role in Lake County's strong economy and economic development and I am proud to do my part in ensuring agriculture thrives for generations to come," said Commissioner John Plecnik.

Commissioner John Hamercheck extended gratitude to bureau officials, adding, "It's easy to forget all the men and women behind the scenes, working on the farms and providing fresh food. Now, we join the Farm Bureau in recognition of National Agriculture Week in Lake County."

Commissioner Richard Regovich echoed his colleagues.

"Our farm and ranch families take great pride in growing a safe, sustainable food supply," he said, "and I am proud to support the adoption of this resolution."
