Lacey residents escape without injury from two Sunday residential fires

Lacey Fire District 3 responded to two fires on Sunday, one in a house and another in an apartment building that left one person displaced.

Battalion Chief Steve Crimmins told The Olympian the department got the first call around 1:45 p.m. A fire had started in a greenhouse next to a home in the 4700 block of 14th Avenue Southeast, east of College Street.

Crimmins said residents of the home reported the fire, and they were out of the house by the time fire crews arrived. The fire had started to spread to the back of the home and into the attic.

Crimmins said crews were able to quickly extinguish the fire. The cause is still under investigation, but it’s believed to have been from an electrical failure.

The second fire was reported at 4:18 p.m. in a small apartment building at the end of Webb Street Southeast, north off Pacific Avenue. Crimmins said Lacey police arrived at the scene before fire crews and evacuated the building.

He said smoke and flames were reported coming from one unit. When fire crews arrived, they found a mattress on fire in a bedroom. The fire was quickly extinguished. It’s believed the cause was accidental and ignited by a dropped lighter or something similar.

Crimmins said the single occupant of the apartment was displaced and they’ve been put in contact with the Red Cross for living arrangements.
