Labor Day Weekend 2017 Staycation Tips

5 tips for enjoying Labor Day weekend, even if you’re not leaving your own city.

A staycation doesn't mean cooping yourself up in the cage of your bedroom, unless you want it to. It's about saving money on what you'd otherwise use on a flight, and using that cash to explore every nook and cranny of your city or pampering yourself for getting through midterms. Pamper yourself with these ideas and spend your Labor Day weekend enjoying yourself before you head back to class.

Master the bath

Drawing a multi-colored tie-dye bath isn't just a way to draw attention to your Instagram account, but to relax like the total boss lady you are. We're visual creatures, sure but it's time you set the mood for no one but yourself.

Pokébombs are the Kinder Surprises of baths: drop one into warm running water, and you'll find a collectible toy within the fizz (because you're never too old to catch 'em all). Cruelty- and paraben-free, they boast soothing skin properties in scents like guava, pineapple and tropical mango. Top it off with an Adele album on loop or your favorite feminist comedy podcast blaring from waterproof speakers with integrated Bluetooth.

Food tour

It's no secret the best types of people are those who live to eat, as opposed to the alternative. Grab a friend and devise a themed itinerary, either focusing on one type of cuisine all day (is there ever such thing as too much Italian?) or selecting cuisines based on your shared travel bucketlist. Food is an exceptionally satisfying way to experience another country while staying put in your hometown. For the real authentic stuff, be sure to do your research. Better yet, sign up for a guided food tour.

If the weather outside is frightful, you're in luck: The rise of meal kit delivery services means ingredients arrive at your door, allowing you to finally host your own version of MasterChef or Cake Boss. Try Red Velvet for decadent dessert kits of all levels like green tea matcha cupcakes or Blue Apron for an udon noodle soup main event.

Beachy keen

Depending on the climate of your region this time of the year, a local beach is the best way to feel like you've traveled far and wide when you've only taken the city bus. Bring a whole gang for a few competitive rounds of volleyball and rest up with the perfect engrossing beach read. Oh, and sunscreen is a must.

Since it's unfair to deny yourself the opportunity to be a beach bum if your Labor Day weekend turns into a cloudy, drizzly mess, replicate the experience at an indoor waterpark.

Exhibit A

See your city through an entirely new (camera) lens by scoping out acclaimed museums and exhibits. Unfairly reserved for tourists and elementary school students on field trips, everything from war to wax museums showcases a facet of your city's history that could help renew your appreciation for it.

Invest in a CityPASS, which grants you discounted access to the top attractions of major U.S. cities like Disney World, The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Ontario Science Centre.

Take up a time-consuming hobby

For millennials of the instant-gratification digital age, "time-consuming" has negative connotations. But with a whole week or two off, now's your chance to take up that crochet you found on Tumblr you've been putting on the back burner, or the opportunity to create a scrapbook of last summer's memories. It can be difficult to include the gym into your busy schedule, but Aaptive, an audio training program, makes it easy. With a motivating and enthusiastic trainer teaching you everything from yoga to Pilates to kickboxing right through your headphones, you might just make it part of your routine once school starts up again.
