Thursday’s Five Facts

[1] Governor Lujan Grisham calls for special session in July – Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham announced she will call state legislators into a special session starting July 18. Lawmakers are being asked to focus on three main areas; pedestrian safety on roads and public spaces with an eye toward panhandlers, laws allowing courts to intervene for those who need substance abuse or mental health help, and enhanced penalties for felons in possession of guns. This will be the fifth special session that Gov. Lujan Grisham has called during her tenure.

[2] Albuquerque Public Schools looking to change bell schedule for ’24-25 school year – In a letter to families, APS announced changes in the schedule for the 2024-2025 school year. Most high schools are seeing little to no change starting at 8:40 am and going until 3:25 pm or 3:40 pm. Most middle schools will start about an hour earlier 8:05 in the morning and end around 2:50 instead of 4:15 pm. Depending on the school, most elementary schoolers will start at either 7:30 to 9:15 in the morning and those starting later could be in school as late as 4:45 pm.

[3] Another warm day, but cooler weather is coming – Temperatures will be cooler by 10 to 20 degrees in northeast New Mexico, behind the cold front. However, the rest of the state will see even warmer temperatures than Wednesday, climbing back into the 70s and 80s. The cold front will cool temperatures across the rest of eastern New Mexico on Friday, and bring in more clouds. More areas will cool down on Saturday, and rain chances will increase for the east and Rio Grande Valley.

[4] Albuquerque water authority proposes raising utility rates – The Albuquerque-Bernalillo County Water Utility Authority is looking to raise water utility rates this summer. The proposal says the combined water and sewer bill for a typical single-family house using 5,000 gallons of water should go up a little more than $6 a month. If approved, the increase would start July 1 reflecting on August bills.

[5] NMDOT to remove murals along I-25 underpass – The New Mexico Department of Transportation will be getting rid of two murals painted on an I-25 underpass of the base of I-25 at Lead Avenue SE and Oak Street SE. The murals show large potted plants in front of a window and a polar bear. NMDOT spokesperson Kimberly Gallegos said that the agency did not commission the murals and that crews will be removing them “probably within about the next two weeks.”
