[1] 1 killed in police shooting in northeast Albuquerque – APD says a woman was shot and killed in a police shooting in northeast Albuquerque Tuesday. Police say officers located a stolen vehicle at the post office in the area of Candelaria and Eubank. They say a man and a woman were inside the car, the woman fled on foot and the man stayed in the car. Officers eventually found the woman in a nearby neighborhood hiding in a shed in a backyard. Police say the she pulled out what appeared to be a gun and at least one officer fired a shot, hitting her. The woman was taken to the hospital where she died. A gun was not found on scene.

[2] New Mexico State University settles lawsuit with former provost – Former NMSU Provost Carol Parker will be getting a $495,000 after suing the university for discrimination and retaliation. Her lawyer says in 2022 then-Chancellor Dan Arvizu and then-President John Floros blocked her from doing a study on pay disparities based on gender and race. Then when Parker reported their actions as discrimination she was put on administrative leave. The lawsuit stated Parker was fired a day before her interview with NMSU’s Office of Institutional Equity. The university settled for $495,000.

[3] Warmer temperatures with possible showers Wednesday – Clouds and showers will develop in northern New Mexico during the afternoon and evening, spinning around low pressure. The best chance for rain will be for all areas north of US 380, especially along and north of I-40. The Metro will see a chance for a few sprinkles or showers this evening, but skies will stay mainly dry today. Temperatures will warm up, with near-normal highs. The warm up will continue through Friday.

[4] ABQ BioPark increasing efforts to save endangered plants – A new partnership between The ABQ BioPark and the Center for Plant Conservation has the BioPark increasing its efforts to save rare plants in North America with a focus on New Mexico species. The Botanic Garden plans to collect seeds through the partnership that will be stored in their deep-freeze seed bank. Eventually, some of those seeds will be grown within the garden. Along with 12 federally endangered plants in their seed bank, the BioPark already has five at-risk plant species in its collection.

[5] Santa Fe elementary school installs ‘buddy benches’ – Atalaya Elementary School in Santa Fe has two new “buddy benches” thanks to efforts of six-year-old Alyssa Kesler. A buddy bench is a place where a child can go when they want someone to talk to. Alyssa pitched the idea to her teacher and other school administrators after seeing a classmate playing alone. One bench is for the pre-k playground while the other is for the bigger elementary kids. Alyssa’s family got involved with a tortilla bake sale to fund the benches.
