Think back to your last picnic. What did you pack for lunch? Maybe you're classy and went with a baguette, brie and ham. Perhaps a turkey avo club is more your style. Or perhaps you can't remember because the meal wasn't epic. That's okay, picnics rarely are. But this picnic loaf is unforgettable.

It's also genius! We can't believe we didn't think of the hack earlier. The technique is very similar to making a bread bowl. Instead of soup, fill the bread with whatever meats, cheeses and veggies your heart desires. For us that means lots of Italian antipasto fixings. Bring on the balsamic.

To assemble the giant sandwich, slice off the top third of a big round loaf (aka boule), then scoop out large chunks of bread from the middle. Save the top for later but feel free to snack on the bready scraps now. The layering comes next! I recommend two cheeses (we used mozz and provolone), two deli meats (salami and ham), and some fresh produce (lettuce and tomatoes). If you're on board for the whole loaded Caprese direction, marinated artichokes and drizzle each of olive oil and balsamic vinegar are excellent additions. The ingredients should go to about the top of the bread bowl before the top goes back on.

Slice the loaf into four to six large wedges before you head to the park. No one wants to carry a big serrated knife in their basket. Because the grand reveal is the best part, wrap the wedges all together to look like the boule it once was. Your lucky picnic friends are in for a truly awesome surprise.
