‘I knew it was going to fall’: Man killed by tree that fell on Akron home

AKRON, Ohio (WJW) – For the past year, Larry Vorshall said he’s watched from his porch as each storm rolled through Sumner Street in Akron.

Hoping for the best but expecting the worst.

Victims identified in lengthy, deadly standoff

“I knew it was going to fall but I didn’t know when,” added Vorshall.

Ring Camera footage obtained by Fox 8 captured the moment Vorshall feared most.

Strong winds from a Wednesday morning storm snapped a large oak tree, which then crushed the top of a Sumner Street home.

Vorshall watched it happen in real-time and thought, “I knew there was one person in that house, but I didn’t know where.”

Vorshall called 911, still holding out hope that everyone would be ok.

Sadly, first responders found a man dead beneath the tree and debris.

The Summit County Medical Examiner later identified the victim as being 33-year-old Paul Matvey.

After what he just witnessed, Vorshall admitted to worrying about this happening again.

Fox 8 did hear back from Akron city officials on Thursday, who said they had never condemned or received a complaint about the tree that fell yesterday.
